The Center offers Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL),
citizenship classes, and computer instruction to anyone 18 years or older. Instruction
is provided by classroom, small group, and one-on-one tutoring utilizing a phonics-based
curriculum. Self-paced educational software is available for those students desiring to
pursue additional reinforcement of classroom instruction.
Adult Basic Education
ABE students require instruction in reading and writing only.
English as a Second Language
ESL students require instruction in speaking, reading and writing. There are 35 different
countries represented in the Center’s current student population.
Citizenship
Citizenship classes, held at least once a year, are designed for those students wishing to
become United States citizens. Students study civics and government in addition to
continuing their studies of English.
Computer Classes
Students receiving instruction at the Center may enroll in computer classes when offered.
Alvin Community College is collaborating with the Center by providing an instructor,
at cost, for computer classes. Students enrolled in these classes will have program
fees waived, a college transcript established, and will receive a certificate of completion
for each course of study from Alvin Community College and the Center.
