The Adult Reading Center, established in August of 1987, is
the only volunteer-based literacy provider in the Pearland area.
We provide FREE instruction to adults who have difficulty
functioning effectively in the community due to poor English
speaking, reading, or writing skills. The Center utilizes the
Laubach method of instruction as our core
curriculum. It is phonics-based with four basic levels of
instruction that can take a non-reader to a sixth-grade reading
level. Videos, audiotapes and other curricula are available as
needed to meet each student’s individual needs.

Tutors
Tutors are trained in the
Laubach method of instruction through
12-hour tutor-training workshops held quarterly. Attendance at
all sessions is required in order to be certified as a tutor. A
$5.00 workshop registration fee is charged to help defray the
cost of copies. All books and materials will be furnished by the
Center when the tutor has been matched with a student. Tutors
are asked to commit to tutoring at least three hours a week. No
previous teaching experience is needed. If you can read and
write, you can teach.
